Don Beireis, another new blogger for Relief, introduces his new series on Finding Relevance through Biblical Characters. If I were asked to order my priorities in life, I would rank them (just as many of you would) as such: God, family, job, and in that order; however, listing them is one thing, living them, quite another. Before I come across as casting stones, let me first say that I have spent several years working 60 – 70 hours per week, focused on business goals, new company records, and colleague approval. And, waiting at home for me is my lovely supportive wife and four of my five beautiful children, ages from 6 to 13 years old. I was so busy working that I failed to remember that God said He would provide for all our needs. And I was too busy working to stop and enjoy these short precious years with my children before they figure out that dad doesn’t know anything and their favorite line becomes, “Seriously, dad, why drop me off in front of school, when you can let me out of the car around the corner?” I have spent far too much energy convincing myself that I’m teaching my children God is first, when all they really see is that I’m putting my job first. So, with the recent change in my career path, I have decided to take full advantage of the opportunity to reassign my priorities and place God back on top, closely followed by my wonderful family. That considered, my hope for this blog series is to not only help myself re-prioritize, but open the door for you to share this journey with me. Rather than try to decipher through a dialect of our language we no longer use (I’m all thee’d and thou’d out here) translated from a culture that existed 2,000 to 3,000 years ago, in a country I may never get to see, I want to do this in a real way! Instead of rushing through bible accounts, I want to take enough time to make them relevant today. Instead of ‘learning lessons of faith’ I want to be willing to ask, is it really faith if I already know how each story ends? And, for this discussion, instead of trying to match archeological digs with carbon dated scrolls, I’d like to reconcile the old with the new in remembering that if God is the Alpha and Omega – the Beginning and the End – then there must be present day applications all through the Bible. Stay tuned for the studies we’ll share in the coming weeks: - Job – Trial of His Faith: God’s Role in our Difficult Times
