Silhouette Words is a creative workspace to develop writing, communication, art and the what-really-matters thought process of life. Everyone is creative to some extent, but many of us would not go through the process of creating and refining a tangible piece of work without there being some type of public outlet where we knew others would see our material. Silhouette is an outlet where we learn by doing; a place to develop our communication skills in various ways, whether by written word or visual expression.
Last year I started a group blog as a place for myself and whoever else I could recruit to get their thoughts and creativity on paper. It ran for six months with a new post once a week or so. Through it I got my first essay "published" online at RELEVANT; that was exciting after many failed attempts. What was surprisingly exciting was when I got some of the other contributors "published" online as well. As the pseudo-managing editor, I picked a few pieces a month and submitted them to different online publications such as RELEVANT, Radiant, and Bohemian Alien.
I feel I've learned a lot [and still have a lot to learn] through managing the blog, writing for myself, networking, helping and appreciating others. As an amateur [when does one really become professional?] it is encouraging to have your piece picked up, but I've also become content with the mindset that rejection brings clarity of some sort. Maybe the piece didn't fit the audience; maybe it was too long or didn't flow correctly; maybe it just sucked. Probably the main goal for me and Silhouette is to learn by doing.
